If so, I suggest you use other music player, such as Spotify and poweramp.

I can't straight-up download the music, because I'm using Google Play Music as a subscription service, and therefore don't have access to the actual music files. Google Play Music supports external download locations, but when I install a USB stick it does not recognize it as external storage. Also, Android 6.0 is supposed to have an option in Settings/Storage & USB to set certain storage devices as "device" or "portable", but that seems to be missing from the settings on my device.

About the internal storage, you must misunderstood something. Our android 6.0 unit has 2GB internal RAM memory, and it can support up to 64GB USB stick to connect.
The internal storage is used for installing third party apps and save the data of the operations system.
We suggest you download the music and other files into the left of 16GB Nand memory.
And you can go to the Settings--Apps to manage the installed and running apps.
Regards

Normally, I go into Google Play Music and click "download playlist" for the music I want. How do I access the remaining memory on the device?
