On my unit 11-RQ1221E-US-A
I have replaced the external microphone with the following
PIONEER CPM1083 External Microphone with 3.5MM MONO PLUG TO 2.5MM Adapter

This works great for me, has resolved the poor quality on the receivers end.
The Microphone comes with a 4 metre lead.

Yes roscored most successful solution seems to be to disconnect the internal microphone.
Which is fine if the external is actually working.

Looking at a different make of external microphone that is designed for car use and does have a 4 meter cable.

Retested both microphones by speaking, the internal microphone is the only one working.

Have tried voice record or microphone test by tapping on each microphone, both microphones are working. I have extended the microphone lead to get the microphone near the rear vision mirror, reading forum notes this may be part of the problem.
