Turns out my problem was with the PAC Audio RP5 / GM11. I had the exact same issue with the replacement they sent. The third one, however, works great and I have the whole setup working as intended.

And let me clarify: I'm using the external mic for phone calls. I believe the internal mic is what is used for interaction with Android apps, like Google Now.
