Using a USB External SSD drive on an Android RQ0911

For those that want a bit more memory capacity I've just installed an Android HU RQ0911 into my Nissan Patrol and all working well.
I have a spare Samsung 120gb SSD 840EVO Drive and with it formatted as Fat32 created directories with APKs, Movies, Music and backups ect.
The Android HU has no problems seeing it and can play or install from the SSD Drive.
To remove the Drive you have to go into Settings, Storage, USB SD Card and unmount.
The 3G/USB cables on the back of the RQ0911 HU have 5 volts power on all the time whether the unit is turned on or off so I'm reluctant to leave the SSD Drive plugged into the Head Unit when not in use, other than that works a treat!

Hi, about the USB external SSD drive, as you can see from our website listing, this unit only support USB HDD drive up to 80GB, could you please use another USB external HDD drive to check? Or you can use a normal 8GB/16Gb USB stick to play music and movie via USB cable.

I did try a Samsung EVO 16gb SD Card and yes it worked just as well.
Jammy I do have a 150gb normal drive I could try for you but what is the reason when the SSD drive works and is more robust ?

Hi, could you please tell us your order number or buyer ID?
Cause the big USB SSD/HHD drive plugged into the USB cable on the back of the unit, it may cause the USB power supply model on the mainboard of the unit broken. Please contact our customer service to return the unit.

The Samsung SSD Drive draws 20mA average and less than 10mA at idle. A standard USB port has 500mA so what's the problem?

What we've got here is failure to communicate.


Tom's Hardware tested several USB SSD drives. The Samsung EVO 840 series does not have a significant change in the amount of operating power until you go beyond 500GB:

The 120GB-1TB drives at idle draw between .30 to .32 watts.

Operating, they draw from .85 to .98, while the 1TB drive draws 1.35 watts.

Anand Tech also tested some USB SSD drives in 2015. They noted that the initial specification for USB only had provisions for 0.75 watts of power – 150 mA at 5 V. USB 2.0 bumped that to 500 mA, or 2.5 watts, and USB 3.0 specified 900 mA at 5 V, or 4.5 watts.

Given that, if the Pumpkin unit uses a USB 1 port, then it is limited to .75 watts and would not power the Samsung SSD. If it is USB 2.0, it is limited to 2.5 watts and can easily power any of the Samsung SSD drives.

Power consumption for thumb drives is difficult to obtain. It can be measured with a modified cable. Tom's Hardware did so back in 2005 and found a 16MB memory stick drew .15 watt in use. A 2014 paper I found showed a typical USB thumb drive used 185 mA in use and 65mA at idle. At 5V, these are .925 and .325 watts, so in use it uses slightly less to slightly more power than do the Samsung EVO 840 120-500GB units (.85 to .98W).


Conclusion: If you can use a typical USB thumb drive, you can use the EVO 840 120 through 500GB drives with no problem. If the Pumpkin port is USB 2.0 or higher, then you can also use the 1TB drive.
