How typical is to keep equipment BNIB for year without using it?

A buyer can't believe I kept equipment in BNIB condition for years and only used it for a couple of months. I want to show him how typical it is for you to buy new equipment, put it away in a closet, buy more new equipment, and years later finally install said equipment?

I didn't find the right solution from the internet.
