Stuck in boot - need to reinstall firmware

Hi,

I've got a KD-C0356 unit that refuses to boot (I just see the VW logo). According to the manual, the filesystem is fried and needs a reinstall. However, the manual does not specify how to complete this. Can someone point me to the documentation?

Or alternatively, is there a serial console available so I can just manually fsck the system?
