DVD aspect ratio (letterboxing)

How can I make the DVD player app stop letterboxing my movies? on both the headunit and the TV/monitor I have plugged into it the screen is already 16:9 but the player is letterboxingand squashing it as if it's playing on a 4:3 screen. The only way I can watch in the proper aspect ratio is to put the TV's aspect setting into "normal" (4:3) mode where it letterboxes the sides on top of the player's top/bottom letterboxing. This wastes a lot of screen with blackspace. I can find no settings in the DVD player app and the system settings (already put into developer mode) also have no screen aspect settings I can find.
I had this same problem on a (unlabeled on the box and unit) Nakamichi unit. They never replied to my complaint.

VA0201B-A08 on the box. If it's a different number on the unit, I'll have to uninstall it to see (unless there's a useful number displayed in Settings).

The seller? I seriously doubt they were the ones who programmed the DVD player app to letterbox the video that way.

I talked with Amazon about this and they agreed that this is a manufacturer or app programmer issue. they also said this appears to be a common issue for these players (various brands).
