Faulty Volume Control

The volume control in my unit has failed. When I try to change the volume with the volume knob the level varies intermittently. Luckily I can still adjust the volume with the touch screen slider. I am a retired electronics technician so I am sure I am capable of replacing the digital potentiometer myself but how do I find out what type it is. When I go to the trouble of uninstalling the unit I want to fix it and put it straight back and not have to uninstall and reinstall multiple times. Can anyone suggest where I find the type used or are they all a common item like the old analogue potentiometers?
