VPN not working

I have an android 7.1 head unit, and have not been able to get a VPN connection working properly. I have tried using both openvpn (through the openvpn app) and softeither (via the VPN settings). In each instance, I am able to successfully connect, but all my requests timeout. I have tested my VPN server and connected successfully. Has anyone else encountered this, and figured out a way to resolve the problem?
